Instruction for Authors

JIDA is the official scientific publication of the Iranian Dental Association (Electronic ISSN: 2383-3041). Our aim is to enhance the knowledge and promote the quality of practice of dental clinicians and scholars. JIDA accepts papers reporting the results of original research projects, review articles, case reports and technical reports in the field of dentistry. Only descriptive and analytical studies conducted at the national level will be considered for initial evaluation and potential publication. The review articles are subjected to peer reviewing and accepted only if the importance of the topics and quality of the works are established at any given time. JIDA gladly accepts quality research works conducted by the members of academia or private dental professionals from all over the world.

All papers are published in English. The editor in chief requires the authors to provide a cover letter in which they state the following:

1) The paper submitted is an original and unpublished work and all the listed authors have contributed to its conduction.

2) The authors have not submitted the same material or portions of it to any other journal with a pending decision regarding its publication. Also, additional submissions should not be made before completion of the reviewing process by JIDA.

3) The authors should also guarantee that once their manuscript has been accepted for publication by JIDA, they would not submit the same material or portions of it to any other journal before publication by JIDA.

We publish original research articles, review articles, case reports, commentaries and letter to editors. We are delighted to consider manuscripts for publication from scholars all over the world.

Article Categories

Original Research Articles: Reports of original research that are novel and well-documented are the main interest of JIDA. These manuscripts must be organized into eight parts: (1) Abstract (Background and Aim, Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusion); (2) Introduction; (3) Materials and Methods; (4) Results; (5) Discussion; (6) Conclusion; (7) Acknowledgement; (8) References

Review Articles: Review articles are by invitation only. These manuscripts are usually written by experts in the field who have been invited by the Editorial Board. The Editor in Chief may request a renowned researcher to write a review article on a specific topic exclusively for JIDA. Authors of such review articles must provide at least three citations to their previous published work on the topic to be reviewed. Review articles must be comprehensive and authoritative and must meet the scope of the journal.

2. Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: Manuscripts that review the current status of a given topic, diagnosis, or treatment. These manuscripts should not be an exhaustive review of the literature but rather should review a contemporary thought with respect to the topic. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses manuscripts should follow PRISMA ( http://www.prisma-statement.org)

and the Institute of Medicines' guidelines ( http://www.iom.edu/Reports/2011/Finding-What-Works-in-Health-Care-Standards-for-Systematic-Reviews/Standards.aspx).

Case Reports/Case Series: Reports of clinical cases that can be educational may qualify for publication in JIDA. Case reports/series must describe a diagnostic or therapeutic dilemma or very rare cases. Authors should thoroughly explain the process of diagnostic work up and treatment and briefly review the available literature. Clinical relevance or implications of the case must be discussed as well. All case report articles should indicate that written informed consent to publish the information has been obtained from the patients or their legal guardians. Case reports must meet the followings in order to become qualified for publication: (1) rare or unusual cases that need documentation, (2) well-documented cases showing unusual or "atypical" clinical or microscopic features or (3) cases showing good long-term follow-up information, particularly in areas in which good statistics on results of treatment are lacking. Case reports must be organized into four parts: (1) Abstract (Introduction, Case presentation, Conclusion), (2) Introduction, (3) Case Presentation, (4) Discussion.

Commentaries: These articles are short articles on any subject within the scope of the journal written by opinion leaders and are related to contemporary issues, such as recent research findings.

Letter to the Editor: These manuscripts may do a re-analysis of a previously published article, may include a response to the authors of an original publication, or may be an article that does not meet the ‘standard research’ criteria but may be informative for readers.

Manuscript Submission

Always submit three copies of the manuscript and two sets of photographs, illustrations, diagrams, etc. Manuscript should be typed in double space. Tables as well as illustrations should be typed and drawn on a separate paper. Do not submit tables as photographs. In case of electronic submission of the manuscript the authors must declare that it has been exclusively submitted to the Iranian Dental Association Journal. The text should be submitted in Microsoft Word format as an attachment. The figures should be sent in a format of JPEG or GIF. Submission is also acceptable via Journal URL: www.Jida.ir

Original research articles should include: Title page; Abstract; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Conclusion, Acknowledgement and References.

Title page: Title page must include complete title of the manuscript, the name of all authors with their highest academic ranking, the name of the department or institution in which they work, mailing address for correspondence, phone number, e-mail, and fax number.

Abstract: All original articles must have a structured abstract not exceeding 250 words. It should be structured as Background, Methods, Results and Conclusion followed by 3 to 5 Keywords. Keywords will assist indexers in cross indexing the article as they are published with abstract. Use terms from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) list of Index Medicus. (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html). The abstract must accurately reflect the content of the manuscript.

Introduction: This part should summarize the purpose and the rationale behind the study. It should neither review the subject extensively nor should it have data or conclusions of the study.

Materials and Methods: This part should explain the exact methods used in the observation or experiment. If an apparatus is used, the manufacturer’s name, city and country should be provided in parenthesis. If a specific method is used, citations must be provided; but if a new method is applied, enough information must be provided so that another researcher would be able to repeat the experiment. If a drug is used, its generic name, dosage and route of administration must be given. For patients, age, sex and mean age ± standard deviation must be given. Statistical methods and the software program used must be mentioned as well.

Results: The obtained results may be described in the text, tables and figures (diagrams). The contents of the tables should not be repeated in the text. Instead, a reference to the table number may be provided. Lengthy articles may need sub-headings (especially in the Results and Discussion sections) for further clarification.

Discussion: This part should explain the present findings and the variations or similarities with other works done in the field by other researchers. The results should not be repeated in the discussion again. Discuss the new and important aspects of the study and the drawn conclusions. It must be mentioned whether the study hypothesis mentioned in the introduction was confirmed or refuted.

Acknowledgement: All contributors who did not meet the criteria for authorship should be mentioned in the acknowledgement section. This part should include the names of individuals who provided technical support or writing assistance and the head of department. Financial and material support should also be acknowledged.

Tables: Tables should be submitted in limited numbers with the captions placed above. Do not submit tables as photographs. Provide explanatory footnotes.

Figures: Figures should be submitted in limited numbers, with high quality artwork mounted on separate pages. The captions should be placed below. Data should not be repeated in tables, figures and text, simultaneously.

References: All manuscripts should be accompanied by relevant references. The authors are responsible for the accuracy of citations provided. Number references consecutively in the order they first appear in the text. Identify references by Arabic numerals, and place them as superscript numerals within the sentence. Do not link the references to their numbers as footnotes or endnotes. References cited only in tables or legends of figures should appear as a source note to the table or figure. Follow the style of these general examples, which are based on the formats used in Index Medicus. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus style. If there are more than six authors, list the first six and use et al for the rest.

Proof Reading: A computer print out is sent to the corresponding author for proof reading before publication. Corrections should be marked clearly and sent immediately to the Journal office.

Abbreviations and symbols: Use only standard abbreviations. Avoid using them in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.

Corresponding author: Will be supplied with 5 free issues.

Conflicts of interest

Authors must acknowledge and declare any sources of funding and potential conflicting interest, such as receiving funds or fees by, or holding stocks and shares in, an organization that may profit or lose through publication of your paper. Declaring a competing interest will not lead to automatic rejection of the paper, but we would like to be made aware of it.

The Conflict of Interest statement should list each author separately by name: John Smith declares that he has no conflict of interest.

 Paula Taylor has received research grants from Drug Company A.

Mike Schultz has received a speaker honorarium from Drug Company B and owns stock in Drug Company C.

If multiple authors declare no conflict, this can be done in one sentence: John Smith, Paula Taylor, and Mike Schultz declare that they have no conflict of interest.

Open Access Policy:

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public.

There are no charges for publication in this Journal.

Copyright

The entire contents of the Journal of Iranian Dental Association are protected under international copyrights. This Journal is for your personal noncommercial use. You may not modify copy, distribute, transmit, display, or publish any materials contained in the Journal without prior written permission from the Journal or the appropriate copyright owner.

Illustrations

Radiographs, CT scans, ECGs, graphs, etc. should be professionally designed. Do not send artwork, or slides. Glossy photographs are requested. Computer-generated line art is acceptable only as an original work. The back of each illustration should have the following information: figure number, title of manuscript, and correct orientation (i.e. top). Complete anonymity of patients is recommended. Please mask the eyes in photographs of patients.

Disposal of material

Once published, all copies of the manuscript, correspondence and artwork will be held for 6 months before disposal.

The final checklist

The authors must ensure that before submitting their manuscript for publication, they have taken care of the following:

1- Title page should contain title, name of the author/co-authors, their affiliation, and mailing address for future correspondence, E-mail address and phone and fax numbers.

2- Abstract in structured format not exceeding 250 words.

3- Reference style as stated in the Instruction to Authors.

4- Tables should be typed on separate pages.

5- Provide captions for tables and figures. Do not repeat the results in tables if they have been already mentioned in the text.

6- Photographs / illustrations along with their captions.

7- Manuscript in triplicate.

8- Letter of undertaking signed by all authors.

9- Disclosure regarding sources of funding and conflicts of interest if any besides approval of the study by the respective Ethics Committee/ Institution Review Board.

10- Covering Letter.
