Author Guidelines for Commentaries Submitted to JIDA

Commentaries are short, focused articles that offer critical insights, expert perspectives, or scholarly reflections on topics relevant to dentistry and oral health. They may respond to previously published articles, highlight emerging issues, or propose new directions for research, education, or clinical practice.

  1. Purpose and Scope

Commentaries should offer a thoughtful and well-reasoned analysis or opinion on a clearly defined topic, study, or emerging trend within the field of dentistry. They may explore a wide range of themes, including clinical practice, dental education, ethical considerations, health policy, or research methodology. While personal insights and expert perspectives are welcome, the content must be grounded in relevant evidence and scholarly literature to ensure credibility and depth. The goal is to stimulate meaningful academic dialogue, challenge conventional thinking, or highlight new directions for inquiry and practice.

  2. Structure and Format

Commentary submissions should begin with a clear and concise title that accurately reflects the central theme of the article. An abstract is generally not required unless specifically requested by the journal. The main body of the text should be approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words in length and organized into short, coherent sections that support readability and logical flow. References must follow the Vancouver style and should be limited to essential sources, typically not exceeding 15 citations. While tables and figures are seldom necessary in commentaries, they may be included if they serve to enhance clarity or support key points within the discussion.

  3. Writing Style

Authors are encouraged to adopt a scholarly yet accessible tone that reflects both expertise and clarity. The writing should be precise and well-informed, while remaining approachable to a broad readership within the dental community. Jargon and overly technical language should be avoided in favor of clear, concise expression. The use of first-person voice is acceptable when appropriate—particularly in reflective or experience-based commentary—such as phrases like “In our experience…” or “We observed…” which can help personalize and contextualize the discussion.

  4. Referencing

Authors should support their claims and arguments by citing relevant literature that helps contextualize their perspective within the broader scientific or clinical discourse. References must be formatted in Vancouver style, numbered sequentially in the order they appear in the text. This ensures clarity, consistency, and adherence to widely accepted academic standards.
